National Weather Service Issues Excessive Heat Advisory for Major Metropolitan Corridor

Washington, D.C. — [Date] — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an official Excessive Heat Advisory for the greater Metropolitan Corridor effective from 10:00 AM local time today through 8:00 PM Friday evening.

What is the nature of the event? An intense and prolonged heat dome has settled over the region, pushing temperatures to a projected high of 103 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat index, which factors in humidity to measure the “feels like” temperature, is expected to peak at a dangerous 112 degrees.

Where is this event taking place? The advisory covers a 50-mile radius encompassing the downtown core and all suburban counties, including areas from the eastern seaboard gateway to the western exurbs.

When will the advisory be in effect? The advisory will run continuously for the next 36 hours, with the highest level of risk expected between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM today and Friday.

Who is affected? All residents and visitors are urged to take precautions. Primary at-risk groups include the elderly, infants, individuals with pre-existing respiratory or cardiovascular conditions, outdoor workers, and persons without access to adequate cooling or hydration.

Why is this action being taken? Meteorologists confirm that a high-pressure system is stalled over the region, preventing relief from coastal breezes. Authorities emphasize that these conditions are classified as a Level 3—High Risk hazard, capable of causing heat exhaustion or heat stroke within minutes of prolonged exposure.

The NWS, in coordination with the Office of Emergency Management, is directing all non-essential personnel to remain indoors. Cooling centers have been established at 12 public library locations and 4 community recreation centers. Residents are instructed to dial 3-1-1 for transport to these facilities and to dial 9-1-1 immediately
